Valentine and north-central Nebraska are the home to some unbelievable recreational trails. Many of these started out as game trails—some as railroads. Now, they can lead a walker, birdwatcher, hiker, cyclist, or horse-back rider on a phenomenal tour of the canyons that intersect at the heart city of Nebraska. While do trails matter? Americans, including dwellers of the Great Plains are suffering an epidemic of obesity and diabetes, all related to physical inactivity and unhealthy eating. Providing more places for these folks to walk—places that are irresistibly alluring—helps create a balance in our community. To this end, the Minnechaduza Foundation has responded by assisting the Valentine Recreational Trails Coalition with grant applications to fund improvements and upgrades in local trails. The Coalition meets monthly and has an extensive list of trails projects. These folks are “heavy-lifters” but can always use extra hands (and strong backs). For information about the next meeting of the Valentine Recreational Trails Coalition, contact the Foundation office. As always, trails development takes money, so if you’d like to make a gift of money or time, it would be greatly appreciated. |
