As part of its prevention vision, the North Central Nebraska Child Abuse Prevention project (NCNCAPP) prioritized the establishment of a mechanism for parent support. In the northern tier of Nebraska, parenting enhancement training is unavailable underscoring the importance of this priority in reducing the risk for child abuse. To address this need, the Minnechaduza Foundation requested and received partial funding to support the development of a Circle of Parents parent support group. The program will have a presence in both Brown and Cherry County (Ainsworth and Valentine, respectively). Invitations for participation in these group sessions will be provided to parents at a variety of community information points, including: Department of Social Services offices; grocery store bulletin boards; church bulletins; and at the time of discharge following the birth of a child. The program will aim to recruit ten parental unit participants per session and sessions will be conducted weekly for the duration of the program. In Valentine, the group sessions will be hosted by the Foundation at its building in Valentine, Nebraska. The building contains a general meeting area with small tables and chairs that can accommodate up to 50 participants. Child care will be arranged to facilitate parental participation. A similar site will be identified in Ainsworth, Nebraska for parents from the eastern parts of the four-county region. Partial funding for this project comes from the Nebraska Child Abuse Prevention Fund (NCAPF) which we are so grateful to receive. This funding support will decline by design over a 3 year period. Please consider helping to support this important project with your financial contributions. And if you live in the northern tier and would like to volunteer as a facilitator, please contact us for more information. |
