Cherry County Century Promotes Child Advocacy Center

The Minnechaduza Foundation is sponsoring the 1st Annual Cherry County Century bicycle ride on Saturday, October 7, at 9 AM.  Cyclists will start and finish at the Yucca Dune building at 148 E. 1st Street.  The Cherry County Century ride is designed to highlight the importance of physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle, one of the Foundation’s objectives in promoting health improvement of Great Plains dwellers.  The route will give cyclists a scenic taste of Cherry County’s natural treasures, including: Merritt Reservoir, the Snake River Canyon, the Niobrara River Canyon, the Minnechaduza Creek valley, and the surrounding Sandhills.

Proceeds for this inaugural event will go to support operating costs of the Heart City Child Advocacy Center (HCCAC), a child abuse evaluation and treatment program developed and operated by the Minnechaduza Foundation to provide forensic interview and nationally-standardized medical evaluation for child-victims of sexual and physical assault, and drug exposure.  The HCCAC has been providing these services from its base at the Cherry County hospital since January 15, 2006.  The HCCAC is designed to provide these services to all of North-central Nebraska and South-central South Dakota in an effort to assure that abused children can avoid exhausting travel and repeated interviews as part of an abuse investigation.  In addition, the HCCAC staff provide the most current child abuse information to prosecutors and local child abuse teams (LB 1184 teams as there are known in Nebraska), which ultimately enhances investigation and prosecution of offenders.  Beyond acute care and evaluation, the HCCAC focuses on aftercare planning for each child, to assure that ongoing counseling and medical needs are addressed far beyond the episode of abuse.  The Minnechaduza Foundation, 501(c)3 public charity has received Nebraska tax credits from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development’s Community Development Assistance Act (CDAA) to encourage charitable giving in support of the program.

Individuals interested in participating in the 2006 Cherry County Century may register in advance at the Foundation office, located in the Yucca Dune building in Valentine, or on-line at http://www.allsportcentral.com.  On-site and on-line registration closes at 4 PM on Friday, October  6th, and riders will set off  at 9 AM CST.  For more information about the Cherry County Century, or about health improvement projects like the Heart City Child Advocacy Center, stop by the Foundation office or call Chris Beckby or Tim Ryschon at 402-376-8027, or visit the Foundation website at: http://www.minnechaduza.org.
